Best 10 - Jun Yuan

Chris Callahan (Business student at UMD, graduating in 2022) walking to class after along McKeldin Mall on Wednesday, Jan. 30th, 2019.
The temperature was just above freezing and there was a wind chill alert that day.

I learned a lot from this first photo that I took because it taught me to be more prepared with the questions I wanted to ask my subjects when I went up to them. Also, I would need to run a bit if they were walking quickly.

A picture of the 1st issue of the Diamondback this semester being read on Shuttle-UM service 104 on Thursday, Jan. 31st, 2019.

This image taught me that I could use elements within the image to frame my subjects and give them a little more context. In this case, it showed how the paper was being read on a bus in UMD.

Dr. Sherlynn Shakir from Alexandria, Virginia, giving Hannah Gross, a freshman in Architecture an ear acupuncture at the Wellness Expo in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union on Thursday, Feb. 7th, 2018.
Auricular therapy, as it is also known, is a form of Chinese medicine that can relieve pain and ease anxiety. Small seeds are applied to pressure points in the ear which may stay on for up to a week.

I liked this photo because it showed me how much difference it would make if I could put my subjects at ease. I could only get them from such an angle because they were comfortable with me taking their photo.

This photo was taken at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Jan. 25th, 2019.

I liked this photo because it caught him in action describing how the names on each side of the walls were left and right-justified accordingly. He seemed quite knowledgeable about the war since he was a veteran and I regret not spending more time with him to learn about his experiences.

Monica Borsella with the Maryland Cheerleading team getting the crowd hyped up after the Terps scored a 3-pointer.

This photo was a favourite of mine because I managed to get her in the moment as she whipped her hair around. I also realised that you could get names through clubs' Instagram direct messages if you knew where to look.

This photo was taken on Saturday, Feb. 19th, 2019 at Grand Central Park.

This was taken while I was on holiday in New York and I liked the way the photo was composed such that the child looked like he was climbing away just as his mum wasn't looking. I think it captured his playfulness in an interesting way.

Washington Monument from a different perspective, later in the night.
f/11 | 8s | ISO160

I liked this photo because of the combination of colours captured. I had always regarded long-exposures as a sort of random capture but this image taught me that if I had an end goal in mind, all I had to do was stick to that spot and keep shooting.

This photo was taken on during the Kite Blossom Festival held on the Washington Monument Grounds on Saturday, 30 Mar. 2019. It was of Aiden, a 6-year-old boy who had been flying a kite shortly before it got tangled.

I liked this photo because it showed a certain determination that was not quite as obvious in adults. It also showed him desperately trying to fly his kite out of danger even though he failed eventually. What resulted was the 5-kite tangle that I shot in the next image.

Enrique Sanz from Northern Virginia trying his best to untangle his kite from four others during the Kite Blossom Festival held on the Washington Monument Grounds on Saturday, 30 Mar. 2019. No kites were harmed in this incident.

I liked this photo because everyone was so patient with each other when the kite got tangled and it showed the potential for such an event to bring people from all walks of life closer together. It also taught me to stick with a subject and follow through since one moment might lead to another very quickly. In this case, Aiden's dad (left) had to step in to untangle the kites for his son.

Julia Le, a Behavioural and Community Health Junior, representing Eta Sigma Gamma on the runway at the Condom Fashion Show held in The Stamp's Grand Ballroom on Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2019. Eta Sigma Gamma was first runner-up at the show.

Sometimes, a little luck is necessary in photography and I was lucky that she was as confident as she was that day, which ultimately led to a better picture as a result.
