Along with the awards ceremony, there was a screening and masterclass with director Robert Rodriguez. No movie would be complete without snacks and popcorn, and they were graciously provided. Students from many different schools came to the event including Tony Ipina (pictured above in a jean jacket), a Junior at the University of Maryland. He came because he was "interested in meeting these influential people, and how I can learn from them." The ceremony honored not only Danny Trejo, and Robert Rodriguez but several members of the local Hispanic community like Susan Santana, the Assistant Vice President at AT&T. When I asked one of her colleagues, Isabel Cabrera, why they were here tonight they said: "I'm here to support my friend Suzy." Guest of honor, Danny Trejo, also received an honorary award at the event. He was grateful to have the opportunity to touch people's lives and said he was "humbled" by the award. The event was packed with people who wanted to see the two stars of the night including some from outside D.C. Isaiah King, a Junior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said "I came here on my professor's recommendation, I'm really grateful my university was able to afford me this opportunity." Robert Rodriguez was also honored with a surprise award and told the audience about the struggle to break into film. He based his film Red 11 on his experience testing drugs for pharmaceutical companies in order to raise money for his first film Mariachi. The night concluded with a screening of Red 11, followed by a masterclass with director Robert Rodriguez. He showed about 30 minutes of the film and followed it with a Q&A session from the audience.
