Final Project - Dylan - "Atomic" @ Georgetown Glow

Georgetown GLOW is an annual outdoor public art installation, commissioned by the Georgetown Business Improvement District. 2019 marks its 6th year running. This year, one of the highlights is an installation titled "Atomic", by New York based studio Hou De Sousa. (3 December, 2019)

Arborists set up the anchor points for the netting on which the artwork will be installed. Four anchor points are made in total, on the trees outside the Grace Episcopal Church in Georgetown, DC.

The objects that will be used to create the final artpiece - cables, blacklights, hula hoops, zip ties - stacked in cardboard boxes on the grass next to the installation site.

Once the netting setup is complete, Josh and Nancy begin gathering the items they require for the installation.

Josh attempts to find the lowest sag in the net to begin the installation of the art piece.

The first of the hula hoops go up. They are covered end-to-end in a reflective fishnet material.

Josh secures the hula hoops using zip ties.

Nancy prepares another hoop while Josh finishes up with the previous one.

Josh and Nancy refer to their to ensure that they are following their plans correctly.

By midday, about a quarter of the hoops have been installed.

Roughly 75 total hula hoops were ordered for this project in varying sizes, with the color coordination planned by Josh and Nancy beforehand.

The reference sheet allows Nancy to direct Josh to place the hoops in the correct orientations.

A total of seven different colors of hula hoops are used in this project, each of them specifically chosen to be reflective under a blacklight.

Josh snips off the ends of the cable ties once each cluster has been secured.

Josh takes a breather from setting up the middle portion of Atomic.

As the afternoon draws closer, Nancy and Josh will have to work on installing blacklights on the floor to illuminate the final product suspended in the air. This is their second year showcasing at Georgetown GLOW; They were here the year before with their installation titled "Prismatic".

On the opening day of Georgetown GLOW, a crowd gathers to marvel at the installation and of course, snap pictures undernearth the structure. (6 Dec, 2019)

Reclining benches have been set up around the artwork to allow visitors to relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere.
